In California last night, the two candidate for Governor in the State of California, Democrat Jerry Brown and Republican Meg Whitman, squared off in their first debate. And while many people were waiting for this moment, this debate will surely still leave a number of undecided voters out there.
Both candidates were able to make their views on the issues clear, and both candidates were able to take jabs at one another with great effectiveness.
Jerry Brown didn’t disappoint. He continued to be the fiery Democrat that many of us have known for years. Yet, unlike in the past, he was rarely able to land any knock out blows to Whitman, especially when it came to her lack of experience with unions and government.
On the other hand, Whitman was able to be somewhat affective when questioning Brown’s job creation plan, which she said only addressed a small number potential jobs in California.
The biggest difference between the two candidates was the style in which they debated. Brown came off are very matter-of-fact and, in some cases, witty, actually showing a sense of humor. Whitman, on the other hand, acted like she was reading off a script the entire time. In fact, Brown even compared Whitman to a commercial in the opening moments of the debate.
If there “had” to be a winner, it would go to Brown, but very narrowly.
In other election news, Republicans continue to hold a slight lead in the US Senate race in Pennsylvania between Republican Pat Toomey and Democrat Joe Sestak. In a recent Suffolk University poll, Toomey leads Sestak by only three points, 45% to 42%. This is within the polls 3.5% margin of error.
In Delaware, ultra-right wing Republican Christine O’Donnell has been able to gain some ground as well. In the ever unreliable Rasmussen Poll, O’Donnell has somewhat cut into Democrat Chris Coons’ lead.
With continued speculation that former Governor and Congressman Mike Castle will enter as a write-in candidate, Coons leads O’Donnell 49% to 40%. Mike Castle, as a write in candidate, is still polling at 5%.
